Taxi to Gibraltar, the film with the highest audience share at Easter.

For yet another year, the television schedule during Holy Week has been flooded with films, including the recurring religious classics such as Ben-Hur, The Judges of the Bible and Spartacus.

However, by far the most watched film of all those scheduled during Easter Week was none other than the Spanish comedy Taxi a Gibraltar, broadcast by Antena 3 last Thursday, which achieved a 14.5% share and 1,880,000 viewers, making it the leading broadcast of the day, clearly beating its competitors Telecinco, which aired the film La habitación (10.9%); and La 1, whose special episode of Cuéntame scored 9.8%.

The film starring Dani Rovira and produced by Atresmedia passed through theatres in 2019 without much success, amassing €1.3 million at the box office. It’s good result on television shows how these types of films are easily exploitable and have other ways of monetisation beyond the cinema. In this case, the film had already been sold to several countries.

Another example of how well Spanish cinema works on the home screen is La gran familia española, which was broadcast immediately after Taxi a Gibraltar and achieved an excellent 11.5% share, making it the undisputed leader in its slot.
