Filming for Matar a Ramón Wraps Up
Filming has wrapped on *Matar a Ramón*, the new feature film by Álvaro Fernández Armero. Following the huge box-office success of *Ocho apellidos marroquís* and the critically acclaimed series *Vergüenza*, the Madrid-based director returns to the big screen with a film that combines light-hearted thriller elements, Spanish slice-of-life comedy, and physical humor.
The story unfolds in a world where humor springs from disaster, clumsiness, and extreme situations, but always from a deeply human and relatable perspective. It’s a story that blends light-hearted thriller, Spanish costumbrismo, and physical comedy, creating a tone that’s very much in line with Fernández Armero’s cinematic style.
It chronicles the odyssey of Ramón (José Mota), who runs a renovation company alongside his wife Eulalia (Yaël Belicha), until an “accident” triggers a series of assassination attempts, each more absurd than the last.
The cast is led by Oscar de la Fuente, Carla Díaz, Yaël Belicha, Israel Elejalde, and Carmen Gutiérrez, with a special appearance by José Mota. Rounding out the cast are Antón Lofer, Álvaro Fontalba, Agustín Oton, Óscar Lasarte, and Chani Martin.
The film was shot at various locations in the Community of Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha, based on a screenplay by Daniel Castro and Diego Soto.
In the words of director Álvaro Fernández Armero: “Matar a Ramón tells the story of the disastrous attempts to kill a poor man and the ineptitude of the agents investigating him. It’s a black comedy—pathetic and tender—but above all, it’s a thrilling narrative challenge. It’s time to dismantle everything I’ve learned over the years in this profession and for all of us to take the plunge to learn how to ‘do it wrong in order to do it right.’”
Jaime Ortiz de Artiñano, CEO of Atresmedia Cine, explains: “Javier Ugarte, Daniel Castro, and I wanted to make a comedy about hapless characters in the tradition of Peter Sellers, French comedies like *The Dinner of the Idiots*, or Woody Allen films like *Take the Money and Run* or *Zelig*. We realized that many real-life crimes involved surreal situations and characters that could lead to very funny moments. From there, we set out to create a satire of crime stories rooted in local customs, which has resulted in this zany story that is, at its core, a portrait of ourselves.”
*Matar a Ramón* is a production of Ikiru Films, Atresmedia Cine, La Terraza Films, and True Crime Factory. With the participation of Atresmedia and Netflix, and funding from the ICAA – Government of Spain – Ministry of Culture.
Beta Fiction Spain will handle distribution in Spain, while Film Factory Entertainment will serve as the film’s international sales agent.
Synopsis
Cantoviejo (deep in La Mancha).
Ramón, who owns a renovation company with his wife Eulalia, miraculously survives a strange hit-and-run accident. From then on, a series of accidents and inexplicable events begin to occur. The investigation falls into the hands of two Civil Guard officers—a veteran eager for the spotlight and a rookie with poor people skills—who suspect that something doesn’t add up. Together, they must solve the first case involving a “serial victim.”
