The 74th edition of the San Sebastián Film Festival hosted, in its Official Selection, the premiere of “5 Minutos Más,” the Movistar Plus Original film produced by Ikiru Films and El Terrat, directed by Javier Ruiz Caldera, written by Berto Romero, and starring Javier Cámara, Berto Romero himself, and Belén Cuesta.
Berto Romero, screenwriter and actor: “I’m a fan of genre cinema, and I was really eager to create a film with a fresh take. Within this subgenre of time loops, I found a twist that pushes the film toward other genres, such as apocalyptic or disaster films. The premise is dark and sinister, and driven by that, I wrote the story by placing the characters in that situation to see what would happen. What happens in this film is that the characters can only react—they can’t reflect. It’s true that the script turned out quite dark, and I didn’t want to star in it. It turned out like life itself, which has no genres—not everything is always a drama or a comedy; they blend together. This is a film that shakes you up and leaves you feeling a little unsettled.”

Javier Ruiz Caldera, director: “It’s an incredible script that had everything we were looking for. We shot the film in long takes to stay true to the script and to capture how the characters felt. Thanks to the producers for giving us time to prepare those shots and choreography. I was looking for something different from what we usually do in this country. We wanted to shoot it urgently because we believed it addressed a very current issue—a sense of not understanding what’s happening in the world. We wanted to tell this story, and we wanted to tell it now. It’s been a very fast process.”

Javier Cámara, actor: “Making this film with Javier Ruiz Caldera has been very moving for me, and it has also moved me as a viewer. These are three characters going through a tough time; there’s intense emotional tension, but Javier and Berto made it very easy for us. We’ve made a film that doesn’t fit into any specific genre. The result is a great film, and we’re very happy.”
Belén Cuesta, actress: “At first, we were really nervous about this shoot because of how it was going to be done. It was almost the first time there was no distinction between the technical and creative teams. It was a very technical shoot, but it was a pleasure to work on despite the challenges; it required the whole team to be in sync, and it was a lot of fun.”

Andreu Buenafuente, producer: “As producers, we have to try to make sure our presence isn’t noticed. There are a lot of people working behind the scenes to make sure the ideas, the actresses, and the actors shine. Being with my friend Berto in San Sebastián is such a treat. His scripts always surprise me so much that, out of respect for his work, I don’t offer quick opinions—he always leaves me speechless. With this script, I felt there was something that was beyond me; I knew it was something very special.”
Edmon Roch, producer: “We have a dream team, and we’ve achieved fantastic things. These are the kinds of things you can only do with a dedicated team. The actors never let us down—it was other things that might have gone wrong. I can’t imagine a better production from Movistar Plus and El Terrat.”

“5 Minutos Más” marks Berto Romero’s debut as a screenwriter and represents a new creative collaboration between Romero and Ruiz Caldera, following their work together on the series “Mira Lo Que Has Hecho” (winner of the Ondas Award for Best Comedy Series) and “El Otro Lado,” both of which are also Movistar Plus Originals produced by El Terrat.

“5 Minutos Más” hits theaters on January 22, 2027, and is distributed in Spain by Filmax.
